Auburn All-America kicker Daniel Carlson is on the 2017 watch list of the Walter Camp Award, which goes to college football's most outstanding player.
The Colorado Springs, Colo., native, who has also been named to the watch lists for the Lou Groza Award and the Wuerffel Trophy and is an AFCA Good Works Team nominee, has totaled at least 109 points in each season as the starting kicker (39 games) and has improved on accuracy every year, finishing last season with an 87.5 percent accuracy rate.
Carlson connected on four field goals of 50 yards or more last season, which placed second to 2016 Groza Award winner Zane Gonzalez of Arizona State.
Carlson is a back-to-back Walter Camp second team All-American and is a two-time first team all-SEC performer. The senior was named 2016 SEC Special Teams Player of the Year and has been named to the SEC Academic Honor Roll in three consecutive years.
Three Tigers have brought home the Walter Camp Award previously: Pat Sullivan (1971), Bo Jackson (1985) and Cam Newton (2010); All three also took home the Heisman Trophy. Sullivan passed for 2,262 yards and threw 22 touchdowns in 1971. Jackson carried the ball 278 times in 1985 with 1,786 yards on the ground and 17 touchdowns. Newton guided the Tigers to SEC and national titles in 2010 with 4,369 yards from scrimmage and 51 total touchdowns.
The award is presented by the Walter Camp Football Foundation. It is named for Walter Camp who played at Yale from 1877-82. Known as "The Father of American Football," Camp implemented new strategies and features that heavily impacted the organization of football.
