BOSTON, Mass. - Auburn alum and current National Women's Soccer League (NWSL) player Julie King broke the all-time appearances record for the Boston Breakers when she took the field Friday night.
King stepped on to the pitch for the 103rd time as a member of the Breakers, surpassing United States Women's National Team midfielder Kristine Lilly.
"It's exciting to be in a position to accomplish that," said King of the milestone in a release by the pro club. "Obviously, I haven't done it on my own, so it kind of gives me a moment of reflection on my journey. It's a point in my career where I can look back to all the people who have helped me along the way and the obstacles and challenges I've faced."
Of her 103 appearances, King has started 96 for the Breakers, logging 8,722 minutes of action on the field. The St. Louis, Mo. native has tallied five goals and three assists while captaining one of the strongest back lines in the league.
"It's awesome for me to have been able to do it with the Breakers because this is the club that gave me a chance at being a pro. I don't know if I still would be playing if they hadn't. It's kind of a full-circle for me, especially with it being Kristine Lilly's record that I'm beating."
"We are so excited for Julie to reach this milestone in her professional career," said Auburn head coach Karen Hoppa. "For her to break this record and surpass a legend in doing so, is a reflection of Julie's commitment to the Breakers and her passion for the game. We at Auburn are all so incredibly proud of her."
