COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The Auburn women's tennis team dropped a 4-1 decision to 49th-ranked Mississippi State Wednesday morning in the first round of the SEC Tournament.
Auburn had early momentum, claiming the doubles point, but Mississippi State controlled the play in singles and held off a late charge in several matches by the Tigers.
The Tigers jumped out to a 1-0 lead with wins on the top two doubles courts. The team of Jaeda Daniel and Madeline Meredith, playing together for the first time since early in conference play, earned a 6-4 win over MSU's 61st-ranked tandem on the top doubles line. Just moments later, Alannah Griffin and Taylor Russo clinched the point for Auburn with a 6-4 win at the No. 2 spot.
MSU took the first set in all six singles matches, but Auburn continued to fight back. Meredith forced a third set in her match on court two, and two other matches made it to second-set tiebreakers, but the Bulldogs prevailed on four courts to clinch the match.
