AUBURN, Ala. – Auburn's two-match winning streak came to a close as the Tigers fell to Southern Miss, 2-0, Friday night at the Auburn Soccer Complex.
The loss marks Auburn first home loss of the season and is the team's first regular-season defeat against a non-conference opponent at the Auburn Soccer Complex in 12 contests.
"There are a lot of takeaways," head coach Karen Hoppa said. "The good thing is we can be better. We certainly had the opportunities. All the credit to Southern Miss, and the way they defended was tremendous. We need to be better executing our game plan and with a total 90 minute effort."
Bri Folds led the way for the Tigers on offense, taking four total shots over the course of the contest. Silvana Poulter and M.E. Craven pitched in three shots apiece and Sydney Richards attempted two.
Auburn (3-3-0) outshot Southern Miss (4-3-0) 15-6 in the match, including five shots on goal.
The two teams battled through the first 42 minutes of the match before Southern Miss broke the tie before halftime. Kaitlin Pierce played a pass into Hailey Pohevitz, who chipped the ball over goalkeeper Kate Hart to give the Golden Eagles a 1-0 advantage.
Auburn fought for an equalizer in the second half, firing off eight shots. However, Southern Miss doubled its lead as Ariel Diaz scored on a breakaway in the final minute.
Seventeen Tigers saw time on the field, including four who played the entire 90 minutes.
The Tigers wrap up a four-game home stand with a match vs. Samford Sunday at 6 p.m. CT. The contest will be broadcast on SEC Network+.
