CLEMSON, S.C. – Auburn (5-5-3) battled a top 10 team on the road for nearly the entirety of the contest but ultimately lost a 1-0 decision at No. 9 Clemson (9-4-0) Saturday.
The two teams held each other scoreless for 83 minutes before the homestanding Tigers found the back of the net on a goal from leading scorer Megan Bornkamp in the 84th minute.
"I was really proud of our team today," head coach Karen Hoppa said. "We executed our game plan. I thought we did a great job disrupting Clemson, and we created a ton of chances. We just couldn't find the back of the net.
"For 83 minutes, we went toe-to-toe with a top 10 team. We need to learn from this game and apply to the next one."
Clemson's goal at the 83:37 mark snapped a streak of 351:51 in which the Tigers hadn't allowed a goal.
Freshman goalkeeper Maddie Prohaska was in net for every minute during the scoreless streak and held the Clemson attack in check for majority of the contest, making four saves in the second half.
On the opposite end, the Tigers could not quite find the back of the net, but the chances were there.
Freshman Anna Haddock nearly got Auburn on the scoreboard in the late stages of the first half as a shot from distance hit the crossbar. It was one of Haddock's team high four shots in the contest.
Clemson went on the offensive coming out of halftime, but Prohaska made a pair of saves in the opening minutes to keep the match scoreless.
After the homestanding Tigers got on scoreboard on Bornkamp's goal, Auburn fought for the equalizer for the final six minutes. The Tigers fired off four shots, including three on frame, in the final stages but ultimately came up empty.
The Tigers are back home next week hosting Georgia. Kick-off is at 1 at the Auburn Soccer Complex.
