NIL

WHAT IS NIL?

The ability for a student-athlete to profit from their Name, Image, and Likeness (NIL) for personal gain. Auburn Athletics, through its SPIRIT program, is committed to supporting its student-athletes in their NIL activities and assisting in the advancement of their personal brands while ensuring compliance with NCAA requirements.

Examples of NIL Opportunities:

  • Traditional endorsements and social media
  • Appearances, autographs, and camps
  • In-kind deals
  • Unique deals, like equity and NFTs

WAYS TO SUPPORT

Rep your favorite players with official NIL gear. Connect directly with student-athletes through the Spirit Exchange. Or show support by joining ON TO VICTORY, Auburn's NIL collective.

RESOURCES

This policy governs the activities of Auburn University student-athletes in pursuing compensation for their name, image, and likeness (NIL) and related responsibilities of the Athletics department and Auburn employees. NIL Policy (PDF)

The SPIRIT Exchange is a custom-designed student-athlete NIL business registry for businesses, collectives, donors, alumni, fans and others wishing to connect specifically with student-athletes at Auburn University. SPIRIT Exchange

All student-athletes have been provided the educational materials below and the Auburn disclosure and review process. Additionally, all Auburn student-athletes will be provided access to education modules and in-person sessions in partnership with the Harbert College of Business on the following topics; Financial Literacy, Taxes, Brand Management, and Entrepreneurship.

Student-athletes’ compensation for use of NIL rights may affect their financial aid. Auburn University offers a number of state and federal financial aid grants based on financial need. Criteria for available need-based grants can be found here. Student-athletes with questions about need-based financial aid are encouraged to reach out to the Auburn University Office of Student Financial Services.

Student-athletes should also seek tax assistance for any NIL compensation earned. Student-athletes should note that taxable compensation might include any tangible and intangible items given in exchange for use of the student-athlete’s name, image, and likeness.

Opportunities for international students to earn NIL compensation may be limited by their student-visa requirements. Prior to engaging in any NIL compensation, international student-athletes should seek clarification from the Auburn University Office of International Programs.

Questions can be directed to nil@auburn.edu. Again, conversations with Auburn University Athletics staff regarding NIL do not constitute legal advice. Student-athletes are encouraged to seek and research reputable outside counsel when pursuing NIL arrangements.
