Intern athletic trainers work directly under a full-time staff athletic trainer while beginning to make independent medical and clinical decisions for their team. As they gain experience with autonomous care and coverage responsibilities, interns apply their recent BOC certification in the evaluation, treatment, and prevention of injuries for their assigned teams and student-athletes. They maintain consistent communication with full-time athletic trainers, sport coaches, strength and conditioning staff, registered dietitians, clinical sport psychologists, team physicians, athletics personnel, parents, and other medical specialists involved in the athlete’s care. Other duties include athletic training room coverage and management, maintaining student-athlete medical and personnel records, and supporting overall improvements to the sports medicine program and facilities.
In addition to the hands-on experience with your team, interns take part in a structured mentorship program and curriculum designed to support both personal and professional development. This program is part of our commitment to helping interns gain confidence and establish a strong foundation as they set their feet in the profession. The program and curriculum includes biweekly staff meetings, monthly mentoring sessions with full-time staff, and group meetings throughout the fall and spring semesters with discussions designed to foster collaboration among their peers while also receiving guidance and mentorship from a select group of full-time staff in a wide range of professional topics.
Our goal throughout the internship is to prepare our interns for a successful and fulfilling career in athletic training and to ensure that, upon completion of the program, they are exceptionally competitive amongst their peers and particularly for positions at the collegiate, Division I, and Power 4 levels of athletic training. We take great pride in Auburn’s consistent track record of placing interns into high-level professional roles following their time with us, and we remain committed to continuing standard.
Internships are a 10 to 11-month appointment with an opportunity to earn a stipend of up to $35,000 over the duration of the internship. Positions carry a requirement for applicants to be nationally certified by the BOC upon the start date of the position.
Alabama state licensure, NATA fees, BOC fees, professional liability insurance coverage, and CPR/ECC course and fees are all covered and paid for by the athletics department during the internship. CEU opportunities offered if there is an availability to do so.
