CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Auburn's 16th-ranked men's tennis team finished off the weekend at the ITA National Team Indoor Championships late Sunday night, dropping a 4-2 decision to No. 14 Texas at the Boar's Head Sports Club.
The Tigers (7-2) won one of three matches against some of the nation's top teams over the weekend. Auburn fell to host and No. 2 Virginia 4-0 on Friday night, then earned a 4-2 win over No. 7 Baylor on Saturday. It was Auburn's first trip to the ITA National Indoors in program history.
After winning the doubles point in all six matches of the season leading into the weekend, the Tigers fell behind early in all three matches in Virginia. The team of Sudanwa Sitaram and Daniel Whitehead defeated Dennis Lengsfeld and Lucas Lopasso 8-3 at the No. 3 position, and Andreas Mies and Lukas Ollert dropped a hard-fought 8-6 decision on court two to Chris Camillone and David Holiner. Alex Stamchev and Daniel Cochrane were leading 6-3 over Soren Hess-Olesen and Alex Hilliard on court one when their match was suspended.
The Tigers pulled even with a straight-set win from Ollert on court five as he beat Camillone 7-5, 6-2. Texas then regained the lead with a win on court three as Cochrane fell to Sitaram, 6-2, 7-6. Stamchev fell in a three-set battle to 69th-ranked Whiteheat at the No. 2 singles position 6-1, 4-6, 6-3, to give Texas a 3-1 lead.
Lucas Lopasso kept the Tigers alive, outlasting Holiner in three sets on court six, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3. But Lloyd Glasspool put the match away for the Longhorns at the No. 4 singles position, defeating Lengsfeld in three sets, 2-6, 7-6, 6-4. Mies was in the third set with 93rd-ranked Hess-Olesen on court one when play was suspended.
Auburn will next compete in the Blue-Gray National Classic, which runs Friday-Sunday in Montgomery.
