Meadows of Dan, Va. - The 12th-ranked Auburn men's golf team (276-553) is in second after firing a 23-under 276-277--553 for the third lowest score in school history after 36 holes of the Primland Collegiate Invitational at the Primland Resort on Monday. Junior Michael Johnson is in second at 10-under with a pair of career-low 67s.
The Tiger are four shots behind No. 21 Wake Forest and Johnson is three shots behind North Carolina's William Register.
Johnson recorded 11 birdies and one eagle on the day while starting the opening round with four consecutive birdies.
Sophomore Matt Gilchrest carded two 69s to finish tied for eighth at 6-under, followed by sophomore Ryan Benton is tied for 16th at 3-under with a 69 and 72, Senior Dan Stringfellow is tied for 19th at 2-under with a second round 69 after opening with a 73 while sophomore Will Long is tied for 35th after a 71 and 74.
"We played some incredible golf today for 36 holes," said Auburn head coach Nick Clinard. "I am extremely happy for the guys. It was a long day, and they stayed focused. MJ was incredible with two rounds of 67, and Matt, Ryan and Dan were strong as well. We have four players in the top 19, and we will be playing for a championship on Tuesday."
Auburn is five shots ahead of third-place Penn State (558) followed by Virginia Tech (561), Tennessee (565), No. 17 North Carolina (566), No. 10 Virginia (568), No. 24 Clemson (571) and UNCW (296-593).
