AUBURN, Ala. - Auburn's Daniel Carlson is being considered for the top kicking award in college football - and his off-the-field work is attracting attention, too.
Carlson won a spot Wednesday on the watch list for the Wuerffel Trophy, which is an award given for community service; and is being considered for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team, an award that goes to players who have "made a commitment to service and enriching the lives of others."
Carlson earned a spot on the watch list for the Lou Groza Award, which goes to the nation's top kicker. He was one of three finalists for the award last season when he hit 23 of his 27 field goal attempts, including eight kicks of 40 yards or longer.
He showed he was still on target in Auburn's spring A-Day Game when he kicked five field goals, including two of more than 50 yards.
Carlson volunteered at the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Lee County, hHelped stuff backpacks for the End Child Hunger campaign and has been with A-Team Ministries, which is a non-profit organization committed to offering spiritual, emotional, and financial support to children and their families within the pediatric cancer community.
Players nominated for the Good Works Team "must be actively involved with a charitable organization or service group while maintaining a strong academic standing." The Wuerffel winner will be announced Dec. 6.
