AUBURN, Ala. - The Auburn women's golf team will make its 21st postseason appearance in the last 22 years as the Tigers were selected to the NCAA Athens Regional, which will be played May 8-10 in Athens, Ga.
Auburn, seeded 12th in the Athens Regional, is one of 72 teams selected to the NCAA Regional field, with 18 teams picked for each of four sites. The top six teams and three individuals from each regional site will advance to the 2017 NCAA Championship, set for May 19-24 in Sugar Grove, Ill.
"We're delighted to be going to Athens," Auburn head coach Melissa Luellen said. "Auburn has always loved the UGA Golf Course, and we have some great film there from the recent Liz Murphey tournament. I'm excited for our players and the Auburn Family!"
The Athens Regional will be played at the UGA Golf Course and hosted by the University of Georgia. The Tigers played the course earlier this month at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic, finishing fifth in stroke play qualifying and also earning a fifth-place finish in the match-play portion of the event with wins over Daytona State and Southern California. Auburn, Georgia, Alabama and Troy all competed at the Liz Murphey and were selected to the Athens Regional.
Auburn enters the postseason ranked No. 45 by Golfstat and No. 43 by Golfweek. Joining the Tigers in Athens will be No. 3 Alabama, No. 8 Georgia, No. 11 Northwestern, No. 14 Arizona, No. 19 Baylor, No. 22 Wake Forest, No. 25 UCF, No. 31 Tennessee, No. 35 North Carolina, No. 39 Clemson and No. 43 Augusta. Rounding out the field will be Kansas State, Michigan State, Troy, Princeton, North Florida and Quinnipiac.
This will be Auburn's 23rd overall appearance in an NCAA Regional and first under Luellen. The Tigers have advanced to the NCAA Championship 14 times, most recently in 2013.
