Daniel Carlson is one of 109 nominees on the Danny Wuerffel Trophy watch list. The Wuerffel Trophy, presented by the All Sports Association, is given to an individual who best combines commendable community service with athletic and academic success.
This is Carlson's second consecutive season to make the Wuerffel Trophy watch list.
Carlson has placed on the All-America second team in consecutive seasons and is a two-time first team all-SEC performer. The returning senior was named SEC Special Teams Player of the Year in 2016.
Carlson's success off the field also speaks volumes. The Colorado Springs, Colo. native has been placed on the SEC Academic Honor Roll since his arrival at Auburn in 2013. He was a second team CoSIDA All-American in 2016 and the Academic Top Tiger in 2014.
Carlson graduated in three years with an honors degree in finance and is currently pursuing an MBA degree.
Off campus, the kicker stays busy being a frequent volunteer in the community and visitor at hospitals. He has volunteered with Auburn Best Buddies, Storybook Farms, Boys' and Girls' Club, Auburn SAAC holiday toy and food drives and events with A Team Ministry Heart2Heart and Champions of Chemo. His hospital visitations include Children's Hospitals of Birmingham, Connecticut and Palm Beach, the East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika, Alabama, and also veterans' hospitals and Ocshner Medical Center.
So far in 2017, Carlson has been on two mission trips. He traveled with Church of the Highlands in March to Inn Ministry in San Cristobal, Guatemala, before visiting the Dominican Republic in May with Fellowship of Christian Athletes.
Carlson was named to the 2016 SEC Community Service Team and is also a nominee for the AFCA Good Works team.
