AUBURN, Ala. - Auburn women's tennis got the fall season started with nine combined victories over singles and doubles competition at the Miami Fall Invite in Coral Gables, Fla., in a season-opening tournament that provided invaluable experience for the Tigers against Miami, Florida Gulf Coast University and Pittsburgh.
"This was a good opportunity to see where we stand as a team," head coach Lauren Spencer said. "We have work to do moving forward."
Freshman Jaeda Daniel had a stellar debut going 2-0 in singles play, including a 6-3, 6-1 victory over Miami's Estela Perez-Somarriba, a 2017 NCAA Tournament semifinalist and the No. 11 ranked player in the country. The Port Charlotte, Fla., native also defeated Florida Gulf Coast University's Bridget Forster 6-2, 6-3.
In doubles play, Daniel paired with senior Alizee Michaud for a 6-1 victory over FGCU's Forster and Maja Ornberg, and also paired with senior Mary Katherine Lewis to take down Pittsburgh's Clara Lucas and Natsumi Okamoto 6-0.
Junior Alannah Griffin and freshman Madeline Meredith defeated Julia Ascua and Madison Gallegos (FGCU) 6-4 while the pairing of Lewis and junior Caroline Turner resulted in a pair of 6-4 decisions.
Weather was an issue all weekend as play was delayed on all three days. Friday's opening day was suspended due to lightning after just 32 minutes of play.
