AUBURN, Ala. ÃÆ'Æ'¢ÃƒÆ'¢'¬" On Thursday, Auburn senior Daniel Carlson was selected as one of the 11 semifinalists for the 2017 Wuerffel Trophy, known as "College Football's Premier Award for Community Service." Over 100 players in college football were initially nominated for the award.
"Each year I'm amazed by the quality of student athletes who are nominated by their schools, and this year is no different," former Florida quarterback Danny Wuerffel said. "Not only is it very difficult to pick a winner, it's also a struggle to select the semifinalists.
"In a time when so much negative attention gets directed to a few players and their poor choices, it's refreshing to see the positive impact these young men are having in their communities."
Carlson has always tried to make a positive impact in his local community as well as across the globe. The senior kicker went on mission trips to both Guatemala and the Dominican Republic this past offseason. He was also one of 22 players named to the 2017 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team back in September.
The winner of the Wuerrfel Trophy will be announced on Dec. 5 and will then be invited to attend The Home Depot College Football Awards Red Carpet Show two days later.
