SAN JOSE DEL CABO, Mexico ÃÆ'Æ'¢ÃƒÆ'¢'¬" A second-round 70 from senior Michaela Owen paced the Auburn women's golf team Saturday at the inaugural Battle at the Beach.
As a team, the Tigers remained in fifth place, tied with Houston at 12-over, after a 292 (+8) on Saturday at the par-71, 6,209-yard Club Campestre.
Owen's 70 (-1) was the third under-par round of the weekend for the Tigers and was her fifth in 11 rounds this season. She started her round with a birdie at the seventh hole and was never over par on the day, playing the back nine bogey-free with birdies at the 16th and 17th. Her round boosted her 19 spots on the leaderboard from a tie for 30th to a tie for 11th heading into the final round.
Freshman Kaleigh Telfer posted a 72 (+1) to move up five spots to a tie for 35th place. Senior Kelli Murphy remained in the top 20, tied for 17th, after a round of 74 (+3). Sophomore Kayley Marschke recorded Auburn's fourth counting score of the day with a 76 (+5).
Oklahoma extended its lead to five shots; the Sooners are 6-under through 36 holes, five shots ahead of Texas and UCLA. Wake Forest's Jennifer Kupcho continues to lead the individual race at 5-under.
Play gets underway at 8:30 a.m. CT Sunday with a shotgun start. The Tigers will be on holes 5-8, paired with Houston, Virginia and Wake Forest. Semi-live scoring is available at birdiefire.com.
