AUBURN, Ala. - The No. 15 Auburn women's tennis team fought valiantly, but was ultimately taken down by No. 38 Tennessee 4-2 on Thursday.
In doubles, Auburn drew first blood. The freshman tandem of Jadea Daniel and Madeline Meredith claimed the first doubles set with a 6-3 win over Tennessee's Elizabeth Profit and Chelsea Sawyer on court three. That victory boosted the duo's win streak to five games and moved them to 10-1 on the season.
Tennessee's Gabby Schuck and Sadie Hammond answered back with a 6-4 win over Auburn's Georgie Axon and Caroline Turner on court two. As the point came down to court one, the match needed a tiebreaker set to be clinched. Tennessee's Kaitlin Staines and Ariadna Riley outlasted Auburn's No. 67 duo of Alizee Michaud and Taylor Russo with a 7-6 (6) win on court one.
Singles action was back and forth. Sadie Hammond earned the first singles point for the Volunteers with a 6-1, 6-4 win over Auburn's Alizee Michaud on court one.
Soon after, however, No. 79 Jaeda Daniel improved her spring singles record to 12-6 and brought the Tigers within one with a 6-1, 6-3 win over Tennessee's Elizabeth Profit on court two. Sophomore Taylor Russo followed that by evening the match at 2 all with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Tennessee's Gabby Schuck on court five.
Tennessee's Kaitlin Staines then put the Volunteers back on top with a 2-6, 6-3, 6-2 win over Auburn's Andie Dikosavljevic on court four. Johanna Silva clinched the match for the Volunteers with a 6-3, 7-6 (1) win over Auburn's Georgie Axon on court six.
Auburn is now 16-8 on the season and 4-4 in SEC play. The Tigers will next travel to Athens, Ga. to square off against Georgia on Saturday, March 31, at 11 a.m. at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex.
