There is never a dull moment for freshman Derrian Gobourne. This lively, outgoing gymnast came to Auburn from Sarasota, Fla., where she competed and practiced at Lakewood Ranch Gymnastics. During her time in club, Gobourne won 11 Level 10 all-around titles in a span of three years, was a five-time Level 10 JO National qualifier and Level 10 state champion on vault, uneven bars, floor, and all-around. Gobourne is eager and enthusiastic for the season ahead and her time here at Auburn.
Q: What's your major, and what made you want to pursue that major?
A: My major is apparel design because I love fashion, clothes, and everything that comes with the fashion industry.
Q: What's your favorite event to compete and why?
A: Definitely floor because I like to dance and I get to interact with the crowd.
Q: What do you miss most about being home?
A: I would say going shopping because we have a lot more options at home than we do here. Also, I really miss my family.
Q: What do you consider to be your biggest gymnastics achievement so far?
A: It was definitely when I made it to the Nastia Liukin Cup last year because it was really fun and cool to compete in.
Q: If you had to be stuck on an island with two other teammates who would they be and why?
A: I would pick A'Miracal Phillips for the first one and Gracie Day for the second because they are both crazy like me. They'd be able to handle being stuck on an island with me.
Q: What's your mind set going into each meet?
A: I really just like to stay relaxed and compete how I train.
Q: How did you start doing gymnastics?
A: I actually started in cheerleading and there was a gym that was right next to where I practiced. I had always wanted to go in there, but my mom would never take me. So, one day she did and then I got into from there.
