LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – Auburn sophomore Julie McCarthy proved she belonged among the elite golfers at the college level this season, and after another impressive performance in the Arnold Palmer Cup, she will now have the opportunity to prove herself against the best in the world.
McCarthy, who won three of her four matches over the weekend, was chosen by the other participants to compete in the Evian Championship, an LPGA event in France this July. The vote was based on who best represented the "Arnold Palmer Legacy," that is, the character and values that Arnold Palmer has exhibited during his legendary career.
"It was great to be chosen to play in the Evian," McCarthy said. "It will be my first time playing in a pro event, so I am really excited. The fact that it was chosen by players from both teams this week means a lot. I didn't think the week could have gotten any better."
"I cannot think of a greater compliment to be admired by her peers who happen to be the best amateurs in the world," added Auburn head coach Melissa Luellen. "Julie is truly reaping the benefits of hard work and being humble along the way."
Though the vote itself took place prior to the start of competition at the Arnold Palmer Cup, McCarthy backed it up with outstanding play throughout the weekend.
McCarthy and her partner, Sandy Scott, won both of their matches with a 3&2 victory in Friday's mixed four-ball event and a 6&5 victory in the mixed foursome competition Saturday morning. She then teamed up with Ana Belac on Saturday afternoon in a foursome match that finished in a tie. The native of Ireland capped the weekend with a 2&1 victory over Hailee Cooper on Sunday to help the International Team secure the title.
Later this month, McCarthy will take part in the prestigious Vagliano Trophy.
