Junior Diego Chavarria won the Navy flight singles championship at the Georgia Tech Invitational in Atlanta, posting four victories in three days to take the crown.
In opening round play, he defeated Stedman Strickland of Mississippi State 6-2, 6-2, and then downed Miami's Stephen Madonia in three sets, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2, in the quarterfinals. In the semifinals, Chavarria defeated Georgia's Alex Phillips in another three-set match, 2-6, 6-4, 6-3. In the finals, Chavarria faced Isaac Becroft of Mississippi State, and prevailed 7-5, 3-6, 7-5 to take the title.
"We had a lot of success last week at Georgia Tech, with junior Diego Chavarria winning one of the draws and beating some good SEC opponents. For him, it was a satisfactory weekend and I think he's finally seeing what we see in him as coaches," Auburn head coach Bobby Reynolds said. "Obviously, we hope that success will propel him into success at Regionals."
Auburn hosts the ITA Southern Regionals this weekend at the Yarbrough Tennis Center. Play beins Thursday and runs through Tuesday and admission is free.
