Auburn women's tennis sophomore Yu Chen captured her second straight tournament title Sunday, winning the main draw final at the H-E-B Invitational, hosted by Baylor in Waco, Texas.
"We competed really hard across the board today," Auburn head coach Caroline Lilley said. "At times we chose to be too complacent, unwilling to play sustained aggressive tennis for the duration of the match. Applying consistent pressure requires a commitment to controlling court positioning and differentiating between a good and bad miss. Most importantly, I am really proud of our players and all the progress we have made so far this fall."
Chen breezed to a 6-1, 6-1 win over Texas A&M's Dorthea Faa-Hviding in the main draw final to finish off a week that saw her drop just one set in five matches. She remained unbeaten in singles play at 8-0 for the year; she also won a flight title at last weekend's Rice Invitational.
"Yu Chen worked really hard this summer," Lilley said. "To see her commitment to improving herself and her tennis paying off is encouraging and fun to watch. Her composure, professionalism and competitiveness display great maturity."
In other Sunday action at Baylor, freshman Carolyn Ansari and junior Lindsay Song picked up a win apiece in pick-up singles matches. Ansari defeated Illinois' Emily Casati, 6-0, 6-1, and Song downed Claire Slaughter from Arkansas, 6-4, 7-5.
At the ITA All-American Championships in Tulsa, Okla., freshman Selin Ovunc fell in the third round of the pre-qualifying draw to UCF's Marie Mattel in three sets, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. Junior Madeline Meredith was scheduled to play in a consolation match as well, but the consolation draw was canceled due to inclement weather.
Auburn returns to action Oct. 17-22 at the ITA Southern Regional Championships, which will be hosted by LSU in Baton Rouge, La.
