AUBURN, Ala. – The 2020 Arnold Palmer Cup teams were announced Friday, and Auburn women's golf will have two players in the field with the selections of junior Kaleigh Telfer and freshman Megan Schofill.
Telfer, a native of South Africa, was named to the International Team while Schofill will represent her country playing for the United States Team.
"It's such a huge honor for each of those young ladies or anyone that's selected to represent their countries," Auburn head coach Melissa Luellen said. "It also signifies that they're considered top in the world in the college golf. Since they have had the girls in the last two years, it's elevated the Arnold Palmer Cup to be one of the top events that all college players want to play in, male or female."
Telfer ranked among the top six on the international side in the latest Arnold Palmer Cup rankings following a strong junior season that included an individual title at the Northrop Grumman Regional Challenge last month. It was one of three top 10 finishes for Telfer who shot par or better in 12 of her 19 rounds this season.
Schofill was a coach's pick for the U.S. Team. The freshman had four top 10 finishes in her first season on the Plains, including her first collegiate victory at the Lake Oconee Invitational in February.
This year's Arnold Palmer Cup is scheduled to take place July 3-5 at Lahinch Golf Club in Lahinch, Ireland, but that could change based on the current situation with COVID-19. The Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) addressed the issue in a press release.
"In these unprecedented times we do not know if the matches will be held as scheduled, postponed, or canceled. With the pandemic affecting so many lives around the globe, there are certainly more pressing issues than golf. However, we would like to recognize the accomplishments of these college golfers since last summer and during this college season."
The event itself, co-founded by Arnold Palmer and the GCAA, is a Ryder Cup-style tournament featuring the top men's and women's collegiate golfers matching the United States against a team of International players. Since its inception, over 100 former Arnold Palmer Cup alumni have gone on to earn cards on either the PGA Tour, European Tour or LPGA.
Auburn junior Julie McCarthy played in last year's event and helped propel the International Team to victory. The United States leads the all-time series, 12-10-1.
