NASHVILLE, Tenn. — The Auburn women's tennis team wrapped up the 2020 fall season Sunday afternoon on a high note, claiming five more wins to close out the June Stewart Invitational.
Auburn won three singles matches in competition against opponents from Tennessee, then took two doubles wins over Vanderbilt.
"Today was our most complete doubles of the fall," Auburn head coach Caroline Lilley said. "We did the right things, win or lose, and we were relentless in coming forward and applying pressure the Auburn way. I would like to see a higher level of professionalism in our singles. We have to remain steadfast in rewarding ourselves for doing the right things and respond to good misses in a way that will fuel us moving forward. Our growth as a team this fall has been fun to watch and incredibly encouraging as we look to continue our development journey over the coming months."
Auburn's three singles wins came in straight sets. Yu Chen downed UT's Rebeka Mertena, 7-5, 6-3; Georgie Axon took down Johanna Silva, 6-2, 6-1; and Adeline Flach defeated Tenika McGiffin, 6-4, 7-6.
In the remaining three matches, two went the distance before Auburn fell short. Selin Ovunc dropped a tight three-setter to Carly Briggs, 2-6, 6-1, 7-5; and Shir Azran came up just short to Esther Adeshina, 4-6, 7-5, 6-2. Carolyn Ansari also found herself in two close sets with UT's Daria Kuczer before ultimately falling 7-6, 6-4.
In doubles, Ovunc and Azran downed Vandy's Lee and Staff, 6-3, and Chen and Ansari picked up a win over Meyer and Cruz, 6-2. The remaining match came down to a tiebreaker before Axon and Flach fell just short, 7-6, to Vandy's Kurtz and Rosca.
The spring season for Auburn women's tennis is slated to begin in January. A full schedule will be announced in the coming weeks.
