CLEMSON, S.C.—Coming off a strong season-opening performance last weekend, the Auburn indoor track and field team had three event wins and eight other medal performances over the two-day Bob Pollock Invitational on the Clemson University campus, Friday and Saturday.
All-American Madi Malone won her second weight throw event in as many weeks, claiming the weight throw with a toss of 22.15m/72-8. She broke her own school record from 2019 a week ago with national leading toss of 22.20m and over the two events recorded eight of the top 10 throws in Auburn history.
Auburn's throws excelled during the Pollock Invite with a second event win as sophomore Maura Huwalt won her first collegiate meet, garnering a gold medal in the shot put with a personal best of 15.56m/51-0.75. On the men's side, sophomore Kyle Brown also had a huge PR and was the top collegiate finisher and second overall with a best heave of 20.58m/67-6.25.
Senior Alex Spyridonidis won the men's heptathlon with 5,314 points, making him the No 4 performer in school history. The Angelo State transfer had the top time or mark in four of the seven events, including a PR in the shot put.
Making her 2021 debut, junior All-American Joyce Kimeli nearly broke her own school record in the 3000m with a time of 9:14.54, just 47 hundredths of a second off her time of 9:14.07 set last season. Kimeli, who was less than a second behind winner Maudie Skyring of Florida State, broke the previous facility record and her time is the seventh fastest in the country this season.
Auburn swept silver medals in the men's and women's high jump. Freshman Kamiya Dendy (1.74m/5-8.5) was second and teammate Caroline Lawrence (1.70m/5-7) was third on the women's side with season-best marks, while on the men's side Dontavious Hill and newcomer TJ Funches tied for second as both cleared 2.05m/6-8.75.
Junior pole vaulter James Courson was the top collegiate finisher and second overall clearing 5.05m/16-6.75.
In the sprints, transfer Dante Brown, also making his debut in a Tigers uniform, was second in the 60m dash. The 2020 NAIA national champion in the event, Brown was fourth in prelims (6.79) before dropping a 6.72 in the finals for silver.
Auburn, which opened the season last week in Columbia, S.C., return next weekend, February 5-6, when it competes at the South Carolina Invitational.
