COLUMBIA, S.C. – For the Auburn women's golf team, the strong play over the last two rounds of the Moon Golf Invitational carried over to Monday's first round at the Gamecock Intercollegiate where the Tigers finished 1-under (287) as a team and are currently tied for third with Mississippi State and South Carolina.
Auburn has now shot under par in each of the last three rounds this spring.
"A solid start for the Tigers," Auburn head coach Melissa Luellen said. "We are leading the field in pars and respectable in the birdie category. The first three holes we had a strong storm hit us, but we were prepared and powered through. We played the final five holes under par as a group, which is always a focus. We're already looking forward to round two."
Seniors Kaleigh Telfer and Mychael O'Berry both finished in the red to lead the way for the Tigers. Telfer made a team-high four birdies and is tied for seventh among individuals after firing a 2-under 70 in the first round. It was a season-low score for the reigning WGCA First Team All-American.
O'Berry continued her torrid stretch shooting a 71 (-1) with three birdies on Monday. The senior has now shot par or better in six straight rounds going back to the fall. She's currently in a tie for 16th overall.
Freshman Megan Schofill knocked in a pair of birdies on the front nine and finished her round at even par. Schofill is tied for 20th, giving Auburn three in the top 20 heading into round two.
Rounding out the Auburn contingent was junior Brooke Sansom and freshman Elina Sinz. Sansom made a late birdie to help the Tigers get under par. She carded a 74 (+2) for the day is tied for 35th overall. Sinz finished two strokes back with a 76 (+4) and is in a tie for 61st.
Duke leads the field at 6-under par (280), followed by LSU (286), Mississippi State (287), South Carolina (287), Auburn (287), North Carolina (288), Wake Forest (290), Vanderbilt (291), Ole Miss (294), Baylor (294), Kentucky (298), Arkansas (299), Alabama (299), Texas A&M (300), Georgia (301), Florida (302), Tennessee (303) and Furman (309).
Auburn will be paired with Mississippi State and North Carolina for the second round, which will feature a shotgun start with all 18 teams teeing off at 8 a.m. CT on Tuesday. Live scoring can be found on Golfstat.com.
