MACON, Ga. – Auburn defeated Mercer, 2-0, in its second and final exhibition of the 2021 season Saturday night at Betts Stadium.
After a scoreless first half, Anna Haddock got the Tigers going. She would score the first goal of the contest with the assist from M.E. Craven. A few minutes later the Tigers struck again. This time it was Sydney Richards getting the assist from Craven and Grace Sklopan to put the Tigers up 2-0.
Auburn dominated the second half and never looked back after the pair of goals scored in a five-minute span.
Auburn outshot Mercer 15-5 in the contest and put 12 shots on the goal. Richards led the way with four shots that were all on the frame.
Katie Carrino and Makenna Garcia shared time at goalie and held the Bears scoreless while defending three shots on the goal. Garcia who played 55:42 had two saves. Carrino also had a save in her 34:18 stint at goalie.
Twenty-two players saw time on the field including eight freshman who got valuable playing time. Mallory Mooney led the way with 77 minutes.
The Tigers officially open the 2021 season Thursday at Samford. Kickoff in Birmingham is set for 7 p.m. CT, and the game will be broadcast on ESPN+.
