STILLWATER, Okla. – Auburn bounced back Tuesday at the NCAA Stillwater Regional with a score of 292 (+4), tied for the second-best score among all 12 teams in round two, and moved up three spots into sixth place heading into the third and final round.
"Day 2 is called Moving Day, and the team played a very solid round of golf today to put them in striking distance of the top four," Auburn head coach Melissa Luellen said. "We need to play very solid again tomorrow and get some help from those teams ahead of us. I am proud of their fight. We just need a couple more putts to drop."
It was once again Mychael O'Berry and Kaleigh Telfer who paced the Tigers on Tuesday as the two seniors both fired a 72 (E) in the second round. Telfer made a team-best four birdies, including three on the front nine, and O'Berry made the lone eagle of the day on the Par 5 18th hole. The duo moved up into a tie for 18th overall at 5-over through two rounds.
Anna Foster and Megan Schofill each carded a 2-over 74 in round two, an improvement on their scores from the first day. Foster is now tied for 29th on the player leaderboard while Schofill jumped 13 spots into a tie for 33rd.
Sophomore Elina Sinz made her debut in the NCAA Regional lineup Tuesday, subbing in for Julie McCarthy, and shot a 77 (+5) in the second round.
The top four teams qualify for the NCAA Championships, and currently it's Baylor (577), Arizona State (590), Clemson (593) and Oklahoma State (594) who hold those spots, followed by Michigan State (595), Auburn (605), Furman (608), North Carolina State (614), California (622), Tulane (622), Campbell (625) and Illinois State (651).
Last year, Auburn went from 12th to fourth on the final day to clinch their spot.
"We have some film and belief that we can do it," Luellen said.
The Tigers will tee off at 8 a.m. CT for Wednesday's third round and will be paired with Oklahoma State and Michigan State. Live scoring can be found on Golfstat.com.
