HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Auburn senior Megan Schofill recorded the best round of the 90-player field with a 5-under 67 and led the Tigers to a third-place finish through the opening 18 holes at the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate on Monday.

"In my front nine, I made a lot of putts and hit the ball really well to get off to a hot start," Schofill said after the round. "I struggled a little bit the last few holes and just managed to make pars. I felt like I hit it in the right places today on this golf course."

Schofill began on the 10th tee and got off to a red-hot start on her opening nine. The Monticello, Florida native rattled off five birdies in her first seven holes to shoot 30 on her first nine. Schofill's 67 gives her a one stroke lead and is her second lowest 18-hole score of the season behind her 65 (-7) during the second round of the Illini Invitational back in October. The senior led the field in total birdies with six as well as in par five scoring, as she played the Long Cove Club's par fives at 2-under par.

As a team, Auburn finished at 1-over (285) and is currently sitting alone in third place and just two shots back of co-leaders No. 6 LSU and No. 4 South Carolina. The Tigers are leading four of Golfweek's top 10 teams in the nation, including No. 2 Wake Forest, No. 3 Oregon, No. 9 Texas and No. 10 Arizona State.

"Megan [Schofill] was on fire on her front nine and I was fortunate to see a couple of her birdies!" an excited Auburn head coach Melissa Luellen said after the round. "Elina [Sinz] played steady today. She has memories of playing well in the past at Long Cove. Casey [Weidenfeld] played very solid and had many opportunities. If she stays patient, she will see some putts fall. We will play with the same teams tomorrow, so we won't play in the final pairing. Our goal tomorrow is to play assertive and smart to earn our way into the final group on Wednesday."

Junior Elina Sinz and redshirt freshman Casey Weidenfeld each carded a 72 (+1) for the team score. Sinz's round featured a couple of birdies on holes No. 1 and No. 3 while Weidenfeld parred 17 consecutive holes after a bogey on her first hole. Sinz and Weidenfeld are each in a tie for 13th on the individual leaderboard.

Junior Anna Foster was the fourth Tiger to contribute to the team score, as she fired a 3-over 74.

Auburn will play the second round of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate alongside players from Wake Forest and Texas beginning at 10:00 a.m. CT. Live television coverage of the event will air from 1:30 p.m. CT to 4:30 p.m. CT on Golf Channel. Live scoring will be available on Golfstat.com and the GolfStat mobile app.
