TALLAHASSEE, Fla. –Fueled by six event wins and 16 personal bests, the Auburn track and field team had a strong outing on the second and final day of the FSU Relays at Mike Long Track in Tallahassee, Florida on Friday.
Auburn swept the 100m dash titles courtesy of freshman Azeem Fahmi and Chante Clinkscale. In his season debut, Fahmi clocked 10.32 to secure the win by 17 one hundredths of a second over second place. On the women's side, Clinkscale continued her dominance in the short sprints recording a new personal-best 11.33, while junior Niya Benton-Andrews crossed in 11.79 for sixth place.
Senior Maura Huwalt secured the bronze in the women's discus throw with her toss 54.66m/179-4. The South Park, Pennsylvania native became the number three performer in school history with her mark. Freshman Megan Hague also had a strong performance with her throw of 45.77m/150-2 for a new personal best and seventh place.
The Tigers swept the medal stand in the women's 400m with junior Ashantae Harvey, and freshmen Arianna Sharpe and Amirah Sharpe. In her first season in the orange and blue, Harvey crossed the line clocking a time of 53.21. The Sharpe sisters were close behind finishing the one lap race in 53.28 and 53.37, respectfully. Nigerian native Abasiono Akpan rounded out the top five with a season-best 54.26 to secure fourth place.
In the men's 800m, sophomore Louis O'Loughlin won the event in 1:50.90 over Auburn alum Eric Brown who clocked a 1:52.26. Freshman Rex Green (1:53.04) and Davis Plowden (1:53.48) had solid outings with Plowden recording a personal-best.
The throwing trio of freshman Matthew Rueff (49.16m/161-3), sophomore Ethan Richter (48.81m/160-1) and junior John Murray (46.07m/151-1) set personal best marks in the men's discus.
Other notable performances came by way of Shaniya Holley (47.63m/156-3) in the women's javelin and Gene Coetzee (4:27.23) in the women's 1500m, both with silver medal performances.
The 4x400m relay teams closed out the two-day meet with a first and second place finish. Arianna Sharpe, Amirah Sharpe, Ashantae Harvey and Abasiono Akpan combined for a first-place finish in 3:36.01 while Luke Roberts, Matthew Rainer, Mo Mpoke and John Stephens secured the silver clocking 3:11.74.
