BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Auburn senior Megan Schofill captured the 36-hole lead and Auburn jumped up five spots on the team leaderboard to second place after round two of the SEC Championship in Birmingham, Alabama on Thursday. Schofill claimed the best round in the field with a 3-under 69 to move into first place individually.
"Overall, I felt like I played really solid golf today," Schofill said after the round. "I kept the ball in front of me and just stayed super patient. I hit a lot of fairways and greens on a day where that was hard to do. I think I just had a lot of patience and discipline today."
Schofill recorded four birdies during round two, all of which were made on a par 4. The senior leads the field in par-4 scoring as she has played them at 4-under through two days. Schofill is now at 5-under (139) for the tournament and leads the field by three strokes.
Greystone Golf & Country Club's Legacy Course played very difficult on Thursday, as all 14 teams in the field finished the round over par. Auburn carded a second-round score of 295 (+7), which was the second-lowest team score of the round. The Tigers' 36-hole score of 589 (+13) puts them three shots behind the leader, LSU.
"Challenging conditions for the field with rain and strong swirling winds," Auburn head coach Melissa Luellen said after the round. "After a rocky start, the mental toughness came out for the Tigers. Megan [Schofill]'s round of 3-under was so good! She played really smart and stayed extremely patient. Anna [Foster] also played solid. We have a chance to win the stroke play portion and we are excited about it."
Junior Anna Foster fired an even par 72 in her second round and was 1-under on the back nine. Foster's two-round total of 146 (+2) places her in the top-10 individually, as she is in a tie for 10th place. The junior moved up 17 spots on the leaderboard from the beginning of the round.
Freshman Katie Cranston shot 76 (+4) on Thursday, which brought her 36-hole total to 150 (+6). Cranston improved her position by 10 on the individual leaderboard from before the round and is currently in a tie for 17th.
Redshirt freshman Casey Weidenfeld recorded a 6-over 78 with a couple of birdies during her second round. Weidenfeld is now in a tie for 45th place with a two-day total of 154 (+10).
Auburn will make a substitution in the lineup for the third round, as redshirt freshman Carys Worby will replace Elina Sinz on Friday. The Tigers will begin the final round of stroke play at 8 a.m. CT on Friday morning alongside players from LSU and South Carolina.
