AUBURN, Ala. – Auburn track and field continues its outdoor season in the state of Texas for the second consecutive week when it competes at the Cameron Burrell Alumni Invitational on Friday, April 7, at the Carl Lewis International Complex, Tom Tellez Track in Houston, Texas.

The meet is named after Cameron Burrell, the late son of Auburn head coach and former Houston great and long-time coach Leroy Burrell. Cameron who captured three NCAA national titles including the 2018 individual championship in the 100-meter dash at Houston, passed away in August of 2021.

"This week is going to be exciting and emotional as they have named the meet after my son," Tiger's Head Coach Leroy Burrell said. "I think there will be mixed emotions, but we are going to get after it. Our teams are really excited and it's a place Auburn's never been. It is the kind of meet where the two teams can focus on each other and try to get after it with each other, almost like a dual meet."

Last time out, the Tigers were at the Texas Relays and were led by (take out field events) freshman javelin thrower freshman Keyshawn Strachan and seniors Dontavious Hill and Sanaa Barnes.

Strachan threw a new lifetime-best 84.27m/276-5 for the NCAA and world leading mark. The first year recorded the number four mark in NCAA history on his way to break the school and freshman record. His performance earned him SEC Men's Field Athlete of the Week, the conference office announced Tuesday.

Hill entered the competition in Austin atop the NCAA with his mark of 2.24m/7-4.25 from the FSU Relays. His performance earned him SEC Field Athlete of the Week honors. Last week in Austin, Hill finished third overall and second among collegiates clearing 2.20m/7-2.5.

In the women's high jump, Barnes cleared a season-best 1.82m/5-11.5 to become the seventh best performer in program history. Her mark ranks her number four in the country this season.

The women's 4x400m relay team of Abasiono Akpan, Arianna Sharpe, Amirah Sharpe, and Ashantae Harvey joined forces for a season-best 3:35.07 to win their heat and secure an automatic bid to the final. The quartet bettered their season-best clocking 3:34.31 in the final to finish sixth overall. The relay team will be back in action this weekend in Houston.

For the Auburn men, freshman sprinter Favour Ashe will make his season debut in the men's 100m dash. Ashe is coming off an impressive indoor season winning the Indoor SEC Championship in the men's 60m dash and matching his personal-best 6.51 at the Indoor NCAA Championships in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Freshman Azeem Fahmi will join Ashe in the 100m dash this weekend. In his season debut, Fahmi crossed the line in 10.32 in the men's 100m dash at the FSU relays just two weeks ago.

In the field, senior Maura Huwalt will return to the ring in both the women's shot put and discus competitions. Likewise, Hulwalt set a personal best throwing 56.34m/184-10 in the discus throw in Tallahassee.

All-American Madi Malone will be back in action in the women's hammer throw. Malone is currently number two in the country with her mark of 68.79m/225-8 from the FSU Relays, not far off her personal best of 69.66m/228-6.
