AUBURN, Ala. – The Auburn men's golf team will conclude its regular season slate with an appearance at the Lewis Chitengwa Memorial, April 10-11, at Birdwood Golf Club in Charlottesville, Virginia.
Auburn rolls into Charlottesville fresh off a 39-under, second-place performance at the Mossy Oak Collegiate a week prior. Through eight team events, the Tigers have finished top three in seven and have won four.
"We're excited for a new adventure this week at the Chitengwa," Tigers head coach Nick Clinard said. "It's a newly renovated course that will test all areas of our game. We'll be lining up with some really strong competition as well. It's a great event to prepare us for the postseason right around the corner."
Making the trip for the Tigers will be senior Alex Vogelsong, juniors Carson Bacha and J.M. Butler, sophomores Brendan Valdes and Evan Vo and freshman Reed Lotter. Vo will be the designated individual player for the week.
For the team field, it'll be RV Arkansas, East Carolina, No. 7 Florida State, Kennesaw State, Kentucky, Loyola Maryland, RV Northwestern, St. Mary's, Texas State, UNC Wilmington, No. 21 Virginia and Virginia Tech vying for the trophy alongside No. 6 Auburn.
All players will begin the tournament Monday in a shotgun start at 8:45 a.m. CT, playing a continuous set of 36 holes before wrapping up on Tuesday with the final 18. On day one, Auburn will be paired with Virginia and Florid State while Vo will play alongside individuals from Kentucky and Arkansas.
The Lewis Chitengwa Memorial remembers Chitengwa, who was a two-time All-American at Virginia and the ACC Golfer of the Year in 1995. Chitengwa turned professional in 1998 and played on the Tear Drop, Buy.com and Canadian Tours in addition to competing at the PGA's St. Jude Memphis Classic. At the age of 26, he passed away as a result of meningitis. In 2015, he was recognized, posthumously, for his immense contribution to golf by being inducted into Mercedes-Benz Southern African Golf Hall of Fame.
