BATON ROUGE, Louisiana—Sophomore sprinter Favour Ashe took home the silver medal in the men's 100m dash to highlight the Auburn Tigers track and field team's final day at the Southeastern Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships, Saturday.
The SEC champion in the event as a freshman while competing at Tennessee, Ashe and LSU's Godson Oghenebrume pulled away from the field 50 meters into the race before Oghenebrume edged Ashe at the line. Ashe finished in 10.08, just four one-hundredths shy of the winning time. Auburn freshman Azeem Fahmi took seventh in 10.25.
Junior Ryan Kinnane equaled his 2022 SEC outdoors finish in the men's 1500m, taking sixth in 3:45.42. Kinnane, who led the first half of the race, became the first AU male to score in the event in consecutive years since Kane Grimster in 2011 and 2012.
On the women's side, defending SEC Champion Maura Huwalt was fifth in a very competitive discus throw field. Huwalt's best attempt of 54.90m/180-1 came on her second of six tosses. The four competitors ahead of her each established new lifetime bests, including Vanderbilt's Veronica Fraley who won with a new facility record.
Freshman Abasiono Akpan claimed sixth place in the women's 400m hurdles in 57.11, the best finish at the conference meet by an AU freshman since 2007 when Danielle Gilchrist was fourth.
Senior Sanaa Barnes was sixth in the high jump after clearing 1.82m/5-11.5.
The Auburn men finished ninth with 41 points, while the Tiger women were 12th with 25 points. Arkansas swept the team titles.
Auburn's next competition will be the NCAA East Preliminary Rounds, May 24-27, at Hodges Stadium on the campus of the University of North Florida in Jacksonville, Florida. The nation's top 48 competitors from the east and west regions of the country will qualify for the NCAA Prelims, with the top 12 from those meets advancing to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in June.
