MELBOURNE, Fla. – No. 15 Auburn leads the field through the opening round of the Moon Golf Invitational, which was played on Saturday. The event's first round was originally scheduled to be played Sunday, but was moved to Saturday due to incoming inclement weather. Auburn's opening round 282 (-6) gives them a one stroke lead over LSU with two rounds to play.
Megan Schofill and Anna Foster led the Tigers on Saturday, each carding a 3-under 69. Both players are in a tie for third individually, three strokes behind the tournament leader.
"So proud of our crew for showing resilience on a long day in tough conditions," Auburn head coach Melissa Luellen said after the round. "Everyone started with early birdies that set the tone for the day. Today was the first time in 24 years that we have played the practice round in the morning and the first round in the afternoon. I think we will all sleep well tonight."
Foster followed up her final round 65 at the team's last event in Puerto Rico with a 3-under 69 in Saturday's first round. The senior's round was highlighted by three consecutive birdies on hole No. 3 through No. 6 at Suntree Country Club. Schofill recorded a 69 (-3) of her own, which marks her fifth consecutive round under par for the Tigers.
Freshman Anna Davis and redshirt sophomore Casey Weidenfeld each fired a 72 (E) on Saturday and both players are tied for 22nd place on the individual leaderboard. Davis' round featured four birdies on the scorecard.
Although the score ultimately was not counted toward the team score, Katie Cranston finished her opening round strong, with two straight birdies on her final two holes of the day. Cranston carded a 73 (+1) and is in a tie for 32nd.
Carys Worby and Ami Gianchandani played in the tournament as individuals and recorded rounds of 73 (+1) and 74 (+2), respectively.
