ATHENS, Ga. – No. 10 Women's golf holds a six-stroke lead over host school Georgia after firing a 3-under 573 over 36 holes on Friday at the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic in Athens, Georgia.
Auburn bounced back after shooting 2-over (290) in the opening round by carding a 283 (-5) in the second round. Megan Schofill, Anna Foster and Anna Davis all finished the second round inside the top-10 on the individual leaderboard.
"Overall, it was a rough morning for the team. Megan [Schofill]'s great play kept us in the team competition," said Auburn head coach Melissa Luellen. "After we finished in poor fashion in the morning, I think it woke everyone up. So fun to watch so many great shots and putts for birdie in the afternoon.
"Anna Foster had a 10-shot swing! Anna Davis struggled a bit with ball striking but sure turned it on during her last five holes. Really pleased to be going to sleep with the lead but there is more work to be done."
Schofill provided the team's only round under par during round one, recording a bogey-free 67 (-5). The Auburn veteran struggled in the second 18 holes of the day, carding a 3-over 75. Her two-round score of 142 (+3) places her in a tie for fourth place individually and six strokes behind the tournament leader, Carla Bernat of Kansas State.
Freshman Anna Davis bounced back after shooting 75 (+3) in the opening round by recording six birdies and shooting 4-under (68) in her afternoon round. The second round matches the freshman's lowest round of the spring. Individually, Davis is in seventh place at 1-under (143).
Senior Anna Foster finished just one stroke behind her teammate with a 36-hole score of 144 (E). After carding a 77 (+5) in round one, Foster moved up 45 spots on the individual leaderboard by firing a 5-under 65 in round two with six birdies. The senior's second round marks the third time she has broken 70 this season.
Sophomore Katie Cranson's opening round 72 (E) was highlighted by an eagle on No. 18 at UGA Golf Course. Cranston then recorded a 75 (+3) to finish the day in a tie for 18th place individually at 3-over (147).
Redshirt sophomore Casey Weidenfeld followed up a 76 (+4) in the morning with a 1-over 73 in the afternoon round with three birdies. Weidenfeld is in a tie for 35th place with a 36-hole score of 149 (+5).
As a team, Auburn leads the field in both par-4 scoring and par-5 scoring. The team also has the second-most birdies in the field through two rounds with 32.
The Tigers will tee off in the final round of the event on Saturday beginning at 9:05 a.m. CT paired with players from Georgia and Florida. Live scoring of the tournament will be available online at Golfstat.com and the GolfStat mobile app.
