BELLEAIR, Fla. – No. 10 Women's golf is tied for second after the opening round of the 2024 SEC Championship at Pelican Golf Club in Bellair, Florida, that was played on Friday. The Tigers are tied with Texas A&M at 1-under (279) and are four strokes behind the tournament leader, South Carolina.
"Very proud of the team effort of posting a solid first round," said Auburn head coach Melissa Luellen. "The course is very tricky with severe green complexes. Add wind on top of that and you have a great challenge. Casey [Weidenfeld] continued her good play along with Anna Davis and Katie [Cranston]. Anna Foster played very solid and smart golf.
"Very appreciative of the local course knowledge from a future Auburn commit who is a member at Pelican Golf Club!"
As a team, Auburn recorded the most birdies in the field with 16 and played the par-3s at Pelican Golf Club at 4-under, better than any other team on Friday.
Fresh off an impressive performance at the Augusta National Women's Amateur on Saturday, Casey Weidenfeld led the team in round one with a 68 (-2). The redshirt sophomore began her day 2-over through her first eight holes, then recorded four birdies on her final 10 holes and went bogey-free on her second nine. Weidenfeld is in a tie for sixth place on the individual leaderboard.
Freshman Anna Davis carded her 11th round under par this spring with a 1-under 69 on Friday. Davis picked up three birdies during the round and is in a tie for 12th individually.
Katie Cranston began her opening round on fire with birdies on three of her first four holes of the day. After a difficult second nine, Cranston finished the round even-par (70) and just inside the top-20 in a tie for 19th place.
Anna Foster provided Auburn with its final counting score of the day, a 72 (+2). She is in a tie for 28th place individually.
Although Megan Schofill's first round did not count toward the team score, the fifth-year senior made history by breaking the program's record for most birdies in a career, passing Cydney Clanton after a birdie on No. 11 at Pelican Golf Club on Friday.
Auburn will begin its second round on Saturday at 7 a.m. CT paired with players from South Carolina and Texas A&M. Live scoring of Saturday's round will be available online at Golfstat.com and the GolfStat mobile app.
