Tigers begin season with tournament victory at Cougar Classic

CHARLESTON, S.C. – No. 6 Auburn started its 2024-25 campaign with a win after posting a final round of 1-under (283) on Tuesday at Yeamans Hall Club in Charleston, South Carolina. The Tigers’ 54-hole score of 847 (-5) led to a one stroke victory over second place LSU.

Sophomore Anna Davis claimed a runner-up individual finish, which marks her fourth top-5 finish since joining the team in January. Davis did not post a round over par at the event, finishing with an even par 71 on Tuesday and a total score of 207 (-6).

"Great start for this young team!" Auburn head coach Melissa Luellen said after the victory. "They were very determined to get the win. Anna (Davis) and Katie (Cranston) had very solid performances. Rachel (Gourley) overcame a rough start to play some fabulous golf. Balma (Dávalos Guaita) played a lot of good golf in her first outing and learned a lot. Very proud to bring home two trophies."

Junior Katie Cranston notched the first top-10 individual finish of her collegiate career on Tuesday, placing in a tie for sixth in the field of 93. Cranston carded three rounds of 70 (-1) in the tournament and finished 3-under overall (210). Her final round was highlighted by four birdies.

Junior Rachel Gourley posted a second consecutive round under par on Tuesday with a 1-under 70. After beginning the round with a bogey on the par-5 No. 4, Gourley notched three birdies and ultimately shot 217 (+4) over three rounds and placed in a tie for 29^th.

Balma Dávalos Guaita completed her first collegiate tournament in a tie for 35^th. Dávalos Guaita provided the final counting score for the Tigers on Tuesday with a third round of 72 (+1) and finished with a 54-hole score of 217 (+4).

Up next, Auburn will travel to Norman, Oklahoma, for the Schooner Fall Classic hosted by the University of Oklahoma. That tournament will be played Sept. 21-23.
