AUBURN, Ala. – Auburn freshman Mats Bredschneijder has been named SEC Freshman of the Week, the conference office announced on Wednesday. Bredschneijder is the second Tiger freshman to pick up the honor, as Alex Frusina was tabbed SEC Freshman of the Week on Feb. 5.
Bredschneijder, who arrived on the Plains in January, had a breakout day on Sunday when the Tigers swept a doubleheader against FGCU in Fort Myers, Florida. In the first match, the Dutchman shut out Ninad Raut in the opening set then won six consecutive games to close out his second set to win 6-0, 6-1 in a match that lasted under an hour that tied the match at one.
In the second match, Bredscneijder closed out his match against Stavros Hadjivarnava in dominant fashion by not allowing a game in the second set and won 6-2, 6-0. The two wins improved his singles record to 4-1 this spring.
Bredschneijder and the Tigers will open Southeastern Conference play over the weekend, as they will face Florida on Saturday at 11 a.m. CT and South Carolina on Monday at noon CT.
