RIO GRANDE, P.R. – No. 20 Auburn finished the first day of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic in a tie for fifth place at Grande Reserve Golf Club in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico, on Sunday. Junior Katie Cranston and freshman Dávalos Guaita led the team with rounds of 1-under (71).
“Team played pretty solid from one to five,” Auburn head coach Melissa Luellen said after the round. “Lost four shots on the final hole which leaves a bad taste, but we have two days left. Saw so many positives that we are looking forward to the next two rounds.”
Auburn completed its first round of the spring season at 2-over (290), which ties the team with No. 9 Northwestern and No. 16 LSU. The Tigers are seven strokes behind the tournament leader, No. 15 Vanderbilt.
As a team, the Tigers posted a par-5 scoring average of 4-under on Sunday, which was the second-best mark of any team in the field. Auburn also made a total of 15 birdies in the opening round.
Dávalos Guaita recorded her best round of the season on Sunday, which featured five birdies. Cranston shot 2-under on the second nine at Grande Reserve Golf Club and only had one bogey on the day. Both Dávalos Guaita and Cranston are tied for 13th place on the individual leaderboard.
