RIO GRANDE, P.R. – No. 20 Women’s golf carded a 290 (+2) for the second consecutive round on Monday at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic at Grand Reserve Golf Club in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico. The Tigers will enter Tuesday’s final round at 4-over (580) and in a tie for fifth place in the 18-team field.
“After making three bogeys on the par-5 at the start of the round, we had some good play and a couple of strong finishes,” said Auburn head coach Melissa Luellen. “Missing short putts was the culprit today, which can be cleaned up. Best day for the last day!”
Sophomore Anna Davis bounced back from an opening round 74 (+2) with a 2-under 70 (-2) on Monday. Davis’ round was highlighted by an eagle on No. 2 at Grande Reserve Golf Club, her third of the season. Redshirt junior Casey Weidenfeld also carded a round of 2-under on Monday with three birdies. Davis and Weidenfeld are both in a tie for 15th individually at even par for the event (144).
Freshman Balma Dávalos Guaita fired a 75 (+3) in her second round and has a 36-hole total of 146 (+2), which places her tied for 32nd. Redshirt junior Carys Worby mirrored her teammate on Monday, posting a score of 3-over (75). She is in a tie for 56th at 5-over for the tournament (149).
Although her second round score was not counted toward the team total, junior Katie Cranston is tied for 37th individually at 3-over for the event (147).
As a team, Auburn holds a par-5 scoring average of 7-under, just one shot shy of the best in the field.
The Tigers will begin the final round 15 strokes back of the tournament leader, Vanderbilt. Auburn will be paired with players from LSU, Michigan State and Kansas State on Tuesday with a shotgun start scheduled for 5:30 a.m. CT.
