HILTON HEAD, S.C. – Auburn redshirt junior Carys Worby led the Tigers through the opening round of the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate on Monday at Long Cove Club in Hilton Head, South Carolina, after firing a round of 1-under (70).
As a team, Auburn shot 10-over (294) on Monday and is in eighth place in the strong field of 17 teams. The Tigers made 10 birdies as a team during the opening round and are six strokes behind the tournament leader, No. 2 Arkansas. Auburn finished Monday’s round three shots ahead No. 14 Mississippi State and four shots ahead of No. 10 Northwestern.
"Very pleased with Carys and her mindset today," said Auburn head coach Melissa Luellen. "She was very focused on playing her game and played great! Casey (Weidenfeld) also played really solid. She was upset with a bogey on the last hole, but I thought she played great golf today on a great golf course. Our one, two and three players need to step it up tomorrow as the leaderboard is jammed up it's moving day tomorrow!"
Worby birdied all three of the par-5s at Long Cove Club and picked up a birdie on No. 9, her final hole of the day, to finish under par. Worby is in a tie for fourth place through 18 holes, two strokes behind the individual leader, Kendall Todd of Arkansas.
Casey Weidenfeld picked up a couple of birdies in her opening round and carded an opening round 72 (+1). Weidenfeld is inside the individual top 20 through round one, in a tie for 13th place.
Balma Dávalos and Katie Cranston each recorded rounds of 76 on Monday (+5) to post the Tigers’ final two counting scores. After teeing off No. 10, both Dávalos and Cranston made the turn at 4-over and played steady on the second nine.
Auburn will begin the second round of the event at 9:20 a.m. CT off the first tee alongside players from LSU and Northwestern on Tuesday. Live television coverage of the second round will be broadcast on Golf Channel from 1:30 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. CT and live scoring of the round will be available online at scoreboard.clippd.com.
