Moison, Brown punch tickets to Eugene for NCAA Outdoor Championships

Auburn throwing duo Kyle Moison and Kyle Brown punched their tickets to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, and the Tigers’ sprint crew advanced seven to the second round of the NCAA East Preliminaries during day one at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Florida on the University of North Florida campus.

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Auburn throwing duo Kyle Moison and Kyle Brown punched their tickets to the NCAA Outdoor Championships, and the Tigers’ sprint crew advanced seven to the second round of the NCAA East Preliminaries during day one at Hodges Stadium in Jacksonville, Florida, on the University of North Florida campus.  

Senior Kyle Moison finished third in the men’s hammer throw to qualify for his second NCAA Outdoor Championships. The Lincoln, Rhode Island native delivered marks that qualified him on all three attempts, including a collegiate best mark of 68.20m on his second attempt. Moison had marks of 65.55m on his first throw and 65.20m on his last.  

Senior Kyle Brown will compete in his third outdoor championships after finishing seventh in hammer throw (66.61m). Brown entered the meet ranked 16th nationally, and he outperformed 41 of the 48 competitors to earn one of the 12 spots for nationals.  

After a five-hour delay due to inclement weather, the NCAA East Region Preliminaries picked back at approximately 10 p.m. with the men’s 110m hurdles and the final flights of men’s long jump and javelin throw.  

NCAA indoor 60m hurdle champion, Ja’Kobe Tharp, ran 13.84 and finished third in his heat of the 110m hurdles to automatically qualify for Friday’s quarterfinals. 

Auburn's 100m quartet of juniors Ian Myers and Azeem Fahmi, sophomore Kayinsola Ajayi and freshman Israel Okon made easy work during the first round of the event, qualifying for Friday’s quarterfinals. Myers and Fahmi finished their heat third, crossing the line in 10.39 and 10.26, respectively. Ajayi ran the fifth fastest time of the day (10.21). Okon won his heat in 10.36.  

Fresh off a silver-medal finish at the SEC Outdoor Championships in the 200m, senior Makanakaishe Charamba ran the fastest time of the day to advance to the second round (20.22). Teammates Dario Matau and Myers will join Charamba in Friday’s quarterfinals. Matau ran the second fastest time of his heat (20.93), and Myers claimed the final spot with a time of 21.04.  

Day two of the NCAA East Preliminaries will feature the Auburn women as 14 Tigers compete in 12 events, starting with junior Alyssa Quinones-Mixon in the pole vault at 4:30 p.m. CT. Running events will kick off at 5 p.m. CT with sophomore Ana-Liese Torian in the 100m hurdles. The men’s shot put has been rescheduled for tomorrow, Thursday, at 11:30 a.m.
