AUBURN - The No. 40 Auburn men's tennis team took four of six singles matches from Fresno State Friday morning to advance to the second round of the Blue Gray National Tennis Classic in Montgomery, Ala. The match was originally scheduled for Thursday afternoon, but rain in the area forced it to be rescheduled for Friday morning.
""It has been a rough day and a half," Auburn head coach Eric Shore said. We have been waiting around to play and we would come out and warm up and then have to stop. It was finally nice to be able to come out and play this morning. It was a tough match and we knew it would be; Fresno State was a good team."
In the No. 1 spot, Alex Schweizer fell in a tight match to Jacub Cech, 1-6, 6-1, 6-7. The match at No. 2 was less competitive as Robbert Lathouwers dropped Mirko Zapletal in straight sets 6-2, 6-1.
At No. 3, Alexey Tsyrenov pushed the second set into a tiebreaker, but fell 3-6, 6-7 to Fresno State's Rudolf Siwy. The No. 4 match was another close one as Pawel Dilaj defeated Charles Irie, 7-5, 3-6, 6-2.
Lukas Marsoun battled through a tough first set to defeat Tejesvi Veerepalli, 7-6, 6-2 in the No. 5 spot, and Milan Krnjetin beat Flavio Mollinedo, 6-2, 7-6 in the No. 6 spot.
No doubles matches were played due to time constraints.
Auburn will take on the tournament's top overall seed, seventh-ranked Notre Dame, Friday afternoon at 5:00 p.m. The matches can be followed in progress at www.bluegraytennis.com.
